Boost Security With Password Requirements

While SmarterU keeps all of your training content and data secure, it is important for everyone with access to your account to consider security as well. 

Online courses often contain confidential information specific to your organization's policies and procedures. Supervisors may be able to edit content or run reports on learners. Admins have access to everything in your account. If unauthorized people log in as any of these users your security can be compromised. 

To address this issue, and add an extra layer of security, we have recently released a new feature that allows you to require your users to create passwords of a certain length or complexity. 

Research shows that longer and more complex passwords are harder for attackers to crack. For example, a password with 12 characters and a special character (such as !@#$&) is far harder to crack than a password that is 8 characters and only contains lowercase letters. 

To set up password requirements in your account, follow these steps: 

1. Navigate to your account settings. 
2. Open the Password Requirements accordion.
3. Click the Enable Password Requirements checkbox. 
4. Set the minimum and maximum password length. 

In general, the longer a password is, the harder it is to crack. 

5. Click the Complexity Required checkbox to make complex passwords a requirement. 

When this setting is enabled, all passwords will need to contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, and one special character . 

6. Click Save.

After saving, the specified password requirements must be met when adding new users, editing users, or resetting passwords. Users will also need to follow these requirements when recovering or changing their password moving forward. Existing users will not need to take any action unless they edit their password.
